Election Commission’s Bihar SIR Drive Removes 65 Lakh Voter Names

The Election Commission released the draft electoral rolls for Bihar on August 1, 2025. EC’s SIR drive cut 65.6 lakh names from Bihar’s voter list. Voter count dropped to 7.24 crore from over 7.9 crore.

EC clarified removals were due to: 22.3 lakh deceased 36.2 lakh missing/migrated 7 lakh duplicate entries

District-wise omissions: Patna: 3.95 lakh Madhubani: 3.5 lakh Champaran, Gopalganj: 3+ lakh each

Congress called SIR a “conspiracy” to help one party. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav said deletions occurred without addresses or ID details.

EC opened Claims & Objections window from August 1 to September 1: voters can seek reinstatement or additions. Communications to be sent via EROs by mid‑August. Final list expected by end‑September.
